Chris Cushing: Shaping the Modern Ski Mountain Experience

Over more than four decades, Chris Cushing has shaped the physical and operational foundations of hundreds of ski areas worldwide. Through innovative planning, technical expertise, and long-term vision, his work has profoundly influenced how millions of skiers and riders experience mountain environments each year.

Born on August 2, 1960, in Franconia, N.H., Cushing was raised in the White Mountains, where skiing and mountain landscapes were integral to daily life. He began his professional career in the mid-1980s, following in the footsteps of his father, Hall of Fame Honored Member Joe Cushing, by joining the company his father co-founded, Sno.engineering (now SE Group). Cushing rapidly established himself as a leader in integrated mountain planning and, over time, became one of the firm’s most respected principals and a global authority on ski area design.

Cushing’s career has paralleled a period of significant transformation in the ski industry. From the 1980s through the 2000s, resorts experienced rapid growth in skier visitation, widespread adoption of detachable lift technology, expanded snowmaking systems, and evolving expectations for beginner terrain and guest experience. Cushing played a leading role in these transitions, assisting resorts in adapting lift networks, trail systems, and mountain layouts to accommodate growth while preserving the essential character of the skiing experience.

Throughout his career, Cushing has contributed to thousands of planning projects at hundreds of ski areas in the United States and internationally. His portfolio encompasses nearly every major ski market, with extensive work throughout North America, including New England, the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Canada. Internationally, his projects have touched five continents, including ski resorts in Europe, Japan, China, Turkey, Iceland, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Sweden, Kosovo, and Argentina. The breadth and consistency of his work are unparalleled within the industry.

Cushing is widely recognized as having assessed, planned, and designed more ski lifts and trails than any other individual globally. His expertise includes master planning, lift alignment and capacity analysis, trail design, snowmaking infrastructure, skier circulation, and long-term resort expansion strategies. Many of the industry’s most prominent resorts, such as Deer Valley, Steamboat, Aspen Snowmass, Vail, Breckenridge, Stowe, Sun Valley, and Whistler Blackcomb, reflect his planning contributions.

A central aspect of Cushing’s legacy is his focus on terrain design that facilitates skier development. He has consistently advocated for purposefully designed beginner and intermediate terrain to promote skill progression, confidence, and retention. This approach has had lasting effects on skier conversion and long-term participation, aligning with industry-wide initiatives to expand the sport by enhancing the experience for first-time and developing skiers.

Winter Sports Technology International magazine has recognized Cushing as one of the world’s most respected ski area experts and a leading authority in global resort design. Numerous projects he has led or contributed to have received design and planning awards, reflecting both technical excellence and thoughtful integration with mountain environments.

Beyond his design work, Cushing has served as an educator and advisor. He has delivered numerous lectures on mountain planning to audiences including the U.S. Forest Service, the National Ski Areas Association conferences, and international industry forums. His capacity to translate complex technical concepts into practical guidance has established him as a trusted resource for resort operators, regulators, and public agencies.

Cushing has also contributed expertise to regional and policy-level initiatives. He served as a member of the Recreation System Group for Mountain Accord and as a Mountain Transportation System technical advisor to the Central Wasatch Commission. In these capacities, he guided long-term planning efforts that balance recreation, transportation, environmental stewardship, and community needs in sensitive mountain regions.

In May 2025, the National Ski Areas Association honored Cushing with its Industry Impact Award, recognizing four decades of innovation and influence in ski area planning and design. This award reflects the industry’s acknowledgment of his sustained, behind-the-scenes contributions to the growth and success of snowsports.

Chris Cushing’s legacy is evident on mountains worldwide. Through technical mastery, strategic foresight, and a consistent focus on the skier experience, he has helped define modern ski resort design. His work has enabled generations of skiers and riders to experience the mountains safely, efficiently, and enjoyably, making him highly deserving of induction into the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame.
